August in the life of The Script

Either by choice or by chance, there’s a lot been happening this month throughout the years. Is it the end of summer blues or the benefits of pre-school sale, it’s hard to say.

The first album

The month has seen the release of the very first album, also called The Script. (Other bands with self-titled albums? Yes, there is a list. A rather long one at that. Check it here. My favourite is “!!!” How do you even pronounce that?)

The album was released on the 8th of August, 2008 in Ireland. (It’s a date easy to remember so can you imagine that the band actually forgot about it?) It was number 1 both in Ireland and the UK and earned a multi platinum in the UK and 5x platinum in Ireland.

It had three singles: “We Cry” (listen to the acoustic version, it’s simple magic!), The Man Who Can’t Be Moved and Breakeven. They added “Talk You Down” and “Before the Worst” to the list of singles with less success according to wikipedia here.

For The First Time (FTFT)

This single might have been released on the 20th of August 2010. I’m saying might’ve been because I just drove myself totally mad by trying to match the various dates the various sources show. According to itunes it’s the 20th of August. According to wikipedia (and this article it quotes) it’s the 3rd of September in Ireland and 5th of September in the UK. I’ve made the executive decision of going with the 20th of August because that’s the National Holiday of Hungary as well and there’s quite enough happening in September so let’s stick with that until somebody with more authority can confirm.

Alternative Cover (Official Single Cover)

What no-one disputes is that this was the first single of the second album, Science and Faith. It was written about the hard times of Ireland in and around 2010 (not much changed since) and tells the story of how Irish families reacted to the recession.

Trying to make it work but,
Man, these times are hard,
But we’re gonna start by
Drinking old cheap bottles of wine,
Shit talking up all night,
Doing things we haven’t for a while,
We’re smiling but we’re close to tears,
Even after all these years,
We just now got the feeling that we’re meeting for the first time.

Hall of Fame

The first single of the third album was released (and I only dare to whisper the dates now) on the 17th of August, 2012. (The band’s page says otherwise. The official video on youtube was published on the 21st of August, 2012. So let’s agree on August at least.)

The “dudette”, as the band likes to refer to it, was partially recorded in’s hotel room after shooting an episode of The Voice. It’s the most successful The Script single so far, popular not only in the UK and Ireland but in the US as well.

The tagline of the song: “This is for ordinary people doing extraordinary things”
