Paint The Town Green

According to The Script’s recent bio/interview on their website, Paint The Town Green is “a modern Irish anthem, an energetic, feelgood, party-on hymn to the spirit of their homeland.”

One might think that with all the travelling they do the song was inspired by their own homesickness but Danny said to Hotpress that they wrote the song for other people who are away from home.

“Spending 90% of our time around the world, you see the ‘Green Army’ everywhere. There’s always a few tricolours in the audience. We wanted to write a song for those people who are away.”

It’s not a sad song though.

“We’re not crying on the page, and it’s not super-emotional as a song. It’s just about missing home and talking about what every emigrant around the world feels.” (Mark)

Danny told to Irish Mirror what the song’s story is:

“We wrote this song approaching Paddy’s Day about a couple in Australia and she is really homesick. So he creates Dublin for her – he tries to paint the town green for her. It’s a rabble-rousing song and there’s so much Irish influence in the melodies.”

You can get the track with the album, No Sound Without Silence on itunes and amazon or pre-order a signed copy of the CD here.

Paint The Town Green was played in full in public the first time in Omaha, 30th of July 2014. Check out the live debut from a fan recording:

And I know you’re missing home
It’s been so long since you’ve left
And that life you had in Dublin
Now ain’t nothin but a dream

To be right there in that moment
You’d give anything to be
It’s alright
‘Cause tonight
We’re gonna paint the town green

And your friends are on the phone there
We’re so close to Paddy’s Day
And it kills you not to be there
But life got in the way
If I had to break the pig
Spend every penny on your dreams
It’s alright
‘Cause tonight
We’re gonna paint the town green

Just like home
Let’s color the streets like our own
Let’s make this place feel like our own
It’s just you and me
It’s alright
‘Cause tonight
We’re gonna paint the town green

And we travel on the subway
Like a wise man knew his life
She’s a heart set to the river
Where we kissed for the first time
She’s a way into Dublin
Yea wherever we may be
It’s alright
‘Cause tonight
We’re gonna paint the town green

Just like home
Let’s color the streets like our own
Let’s make this place feel like our own
It’s just you and me, so right
Tonight I’m gonna paint the town green

(…)

Just like home
Let’s color the streets like our own
Let’s make this place feel like our own
It’s just you and me, so right
Tonight I’m gonna paint the town green
